Recession can provide opportunities for businesses to stand out

Despite the worst recession in some five decades, the recession has allowed some small business owners to stand out from their competition with innovative marketing ideas.
A recent report in the San Jose Mercury News profiled Judy Dugan and Julia Murphy, founders of a greeting card company called Jumping Cracker Beans LLC.
According to the report, the two won the card of the year distinction at the International Greeting Card Awards this year for a recession-themed card aimed at boosting the spirits of job-hunters with an attached packet of lemonade mix and a message of support.
"The intention was to provide a card, that with all the folks being laid off, would provide a way for people to say, ‘Gosh, I’m sorry,’ to be able to say, ‘I’m there for you,’" Dugan told the newspaper. The report added that Dugan is a former graphic designer who left the corporate world to help launch the custom greeting cards business out of what was once just her hobby.
For designers who hope to duplicate the pair’s success in the graphics industry, one new resource may be the Graphic Design School’s new blog, which features input from various industry leaders.
