One positive sign for people in businesses like graphic design and custom printing is a perceived upswing in the advertising industry. A New York Times report notes that economic conditions are still resulting in shrinking marketing budgets for many companies. However, the newspaper notes that companies still need assistance marketing their products regardless of the recession, and that there actually do appear to be signs of increased advertising activity.
"It is absolutely important for people to be prudently cautious. But don't bury your head so far down in the sand you can't see the sun when it comes out," the Times quoted Thomas L. Harrison of Omnicom Group as saying.
Small business owners are often advised not to drastically cut their marketing budgets during a slowdown because of the effect it can have on future revenues. However, at a time when many companies are dealing with matters like layoffs, advertising budgets may not be the first thing to completely rebound as the economy recovers.
The economy has forced advertising companies nationwide to reduce staff in recent months. As a result, any perceived signs of life in this sector will be welcomed.
